Your Neighbors and Pesticides
Pre-Notification of Pesticide Application to Abutting Property
Connecticut residents can request from CT DEEP when their abutting neighbors have their property chemically treated. The deadline each year is December 31. Residents must apply each year to be included in the registry. If you miss the deadline for the year, you must submit your form directly to the company(ies) who are obliged to notify you independently. Registration Forms are available in PDF and Word Forms. See CT DEEP webpage.
How to Talk to Your Neighbors about Pesticides
-
Get to Know your Neighbors
-
Have a calm conversation. Do not start out with an accusatory tone. Remember that most people using pesticides do not know the harms or trust their landscape professional to tell them what is safe and what isn’t.
-
Ask them questions if they know which chemicals are being used. Give them information on how and where to find the chemicals.
-
If they have children or pets, explain what the harmful effects could be.
-
If they have concerns about ticks, provide them with alternatives to using pesticides.
-
Be patient and give your neighbors time to do their own research. Do not get discouraged if they do not stop using the pesticides immediately.
-
Give them Non-Chemical Alternatives!
Non-Toxic Communities has a great blog from March 9, 2024 reiterating the above with links to helpful resources here and here.
